IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing Essay

Nursing is an all-inclusive field that integrates different aspects of health including disease prevention, treatment management, care provision, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Nurses are the frontline workers in healthcare organizations and thus they have the primary role of ensuring patient safety and best quality care (Ross et al., 2017). However, various challenges hinder the ability of nurses to assume leadership roles in implementing innovative renovations within the healthcare system. Therefore, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) began a program aimed to facilitate improvements in the nursing profession. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the IOM report and how RWJF influenced the IOM report, State-Based Action Coalitions, the nursing workforce, and the existing barriers to advancement.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report

The key messages within the IOM report focus on the repetition, training, leadership as well as collection of comprehensive data in the healthcare industry (Kruk et al., 2018). The analysis of the collected data helps to inform the appropriate changes needed in the healthcare industry and the nursing profession. The IOM report provided an appraisal of the appropriate changes within the nursing profession and hence it aimed to map the growth within the nursing profession. The IOM report reflected the current changes within the nursing profession as also accepted by the American Nursing Association (ANA). This has significantly contributed to the associated allied to ANA to participate in various activities aimed to help the nursing profession improve. The launching of the Campaign for Action aimed to assist nurses and other healthcare providers to attain the IOM goals (Moss et al., 2018). This led to the collaboration of the Campaign and the National Academy of Medicine.

The Role of the RWJF and the State-Based Action Coalitions

The RWJF is working together with other organizations such as the Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA) to transform the healthcare system by improving the nursing profession and support the implementation of the IOM report’s recommendations. RWJF and the state-based coalitions assemble unions representing nurses, healthcare providers, educators, consumers, and business persons to ensure the IOM recommendations are implemented (Hodgson et al., 2020). This ensures that Americans receive high-quality care and appropriate treatments. Action coalitions facilitate healthier community networks among the nursing workforce and consist of a diverse nursing workforce that encourages leadership skills among nurses, promotes nursing education, and facilitates data collection to ensure the healthcare needs within states are fulfilled (White, 2017).

The Impact of IOM Report

Nurses are required to cover various aspects in healthcare such as health promotion, care coordination, provision of care, disease prevention, and also the provision of palliative care. Therefore, the IOM report has impacted the nursing workforce by addressing various concerns and focusing on the comprehensive prospects of nurses with an aim of molding and adapting their current careers to the future and the ever-constant changes in the healthcare industry (Tierney et al., 2020). The key message and recommendations from the IOM report have led to significant changes within the healthcare environment that are always undergoing constant changes and incorporating new practices and technology to improve patient care. The report also recommends the integration of best-available evidence to improve care.

Even though nurses can implement and lead changes in the healthcare system, sometimes nurses have been limited to follow directions and decisions. Nurses have the ability to come up with innovations and evidence-based changes, lead changes and implement improvements within the healthcare system (Tierney et al., 2020). Therefore, the IOM report recommends many proposals for workplace development, education, as well as in nursing practice. The recommendations consist of removing barriers for practice, expanding leadership positions for nurses, developing residency programs for nurses, increasing the number of nurses with higher education (baccalaureate degree), equipping nurses to assume leadership positions, increasing the number of nurses, and promoting inter-professional healthcare and collaboration to improve care coordination and patient outcomes.

The Rationale of State-based Action Coalitions

Action coalitions refer to the incentives at the state and local levels that aim for nurses are able to practice using all their abilities and input to ensure high-quality care. State-based action coalitions have been able to establish strong web and networks from national and state organizations and work collaboratively to facilitate developments with healthcare (Green & Johnson, 2015). The state-based coalitions have thus enabled nurses to work in partnership and learn from each other in order to further improve care. The State-based Action Coalitions include leaders, co-leaders, as well as normal members who discuss the structure, procedures, and processes that states have created to collaborate during the implementation of IOM recommendations in accordance with the special state needs. According to White (2017), action coalitions are developed to develop and facilitate long-term sustainable changes at the state, local, and regional levels.

My State Action Coalition and the Two Initiatives

The Action Coalition in my state was formed in 2011 when the state Center for Nursing and Health education centers collaborated in order to implement IOM’s recommendations in the state. The Action Coalition focuses on improving education for nurses, patient safety, nursing practices, and interprofessional education and collaboration (Green & Johnson, 2015). The two initiatives from the state action coalitions include access to care and scholarship programs for nurses. The initiative on access to care involves facilitating collaboration and effective communication among healthcare organizations in the state. The access to care discussion has generated ideas important to healthcare and improved use of resources to ensure people can access healthcare easily. The second initiative regarding scholarship programs aims to support future nurses by awarding funds as scholarships to educate and train nurses. Nursing education includes both undergraduate and graduate education levels to ensure that the nurses are well-equipped and prepared to handle complex care needs and practice in diverse settings (Green & Johnson, 2015).

Conclusion

RWJF and IOM support and recommend advancements and improvements within the American healthcare system. For example, the recommended innovations and furthering education for nurses will go a long way in improving the quality of healthcare in the US. Additionally, the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action and the state-based coalition collaborate to support the implementation of the IOM recommendations and also improve advancements within the nursing profession to improve health care.
